A building is a system

I'm Steven, a mechanical engineer turned building science consultant. I help architects, designers, and builders make buildings that actually perform.

Not just on paper but in the real world where conditions are unforgiving; where durability and efficiency must coexist. My work covers energy modeling, building envelope design, HVAC design, and Passive certification (as a Phius Certified Consultant), and it's grounded in one idea: a building is a system, and every piece has to work with every other piece. Get one wrong and the whole thing suffers.

The name

That idea is also where the name comes from. In geometry, a locus is the set of all points that satisfy a given set of conditions; the place where everything lines up at once. Building well is an exercise in finding the point where durability, comfort, health, efficiency, and budget all hold true together. It's the job I love doing. (The 218? That's the address of the certified Passive House I designed and built myself, the first project of mine that went from theory to high performance livable space. I started Locus 218 because improving our built environment is one of the biggest levers we have for a more sustainable future, and most buildings are leaving durability, health, comfort, and efficiency on the table for no good reason.
